Building Making

PRATHAMESH DESHMUKH | Semester 6 | 2022-23

The building-making course carries out detailed development and refinement of building design through the technical resolution of structural systems, material performance and experience, member assembly, threshold-enclosure details, and construction process. This course aims in understanding and conceptualizing crafting built forms where the logics of spatiality are based on systems and details along with orienting them to the practices around construction documentation and management.

It focused on developing abilities in systems-thinking and the ability in detailing and the act of putting together different materials and their assemblies concerning the design/idea of the built form. These abilities were then helpful in producing Construction Documentation drawings which are well-produced and which can be used for construction.

This course also pushes our abilities further by engaging us in learning specifications, generating bills of quantities, and cost estimation for the project, which made us more aware of the market and practices which are carried around the city.

SITE, SITE FORCES, AND CONTEXT

Cheeta Camp is a very cohesive and intense space in terms of physicality, hence it allows them to form thresholds around their spaces. These thresholds are skins, a membrane structure that swells and shrinks according to conditions.

Such conditions are easily mapped out throughout the day and night. These skins modify with time and activities carried around in the area

The light also has a major role in the site as it also affects how particular groups of people gather at specific niche spaces, also the way they afford it.

PROGRAMME & SCOPE & DESIGN INTENT

The design intent was to Imagine the built form as an extended night/ evening lantern allowing interstitial community programs and activities to extend through evening and night. The program timed spaces thus lend a new threshold providing the community with lit and well-illuminated spaces to aid their gathering.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING

The construction process for my site will be done in 2 phases which is the Male and Female Toilets will be made firsts and then the construction of the Path lab and the Balwadi will take place.

As the site is very constrained the mobility and the import of materials and the making of construction will require certain space.

followed by CPM which gives a logical idea of how the construction process will be carried out in how many weeks and how the construction processes take step by step.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION

CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCING

The construction sequencing comprises how the construction will carry out from the start of the excavation till the finishing of the building design.

SETTING OUT PLANS AND DEVELOPMENT

The line-out plans help in laying out boundaries of the built form to carry out the construction process with precision, which is carried out by total stations.

FOUNDATION PLAN

Foundation is laid out at the start of the construction on which the superstructure will be built, the foundation type used here was Raft foundation because this area has marshy soil.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

the ground floor plan consists of all the programmed structures as per design intent and the structures are 0.45m above the ground plinth.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

The first floor is mainly catered toward community spaces as a part of the design concerning the site conditions

TERRACE PLAN

The terrace of the buildings is accompanied by water tanks at the top and covers bath spaces and changing rooms.

ROOF PLAN

The roof is made up of double galvanized galvalume metal sheets which act as an external roof to all the existing structures. Hence it protects from harsh sunlight and heavy rains.
